The Hanuman Chalisa was composed by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the 16th century in the Awadhi language. It comprises two opening dohas, forty chaupais (verses), and a closing doha. Considered one of the most sacred and powerful prayers in Hinduism, it is recited daily by hundreds of millions of devotees worldwide.

Doha 1

Shri Guru charan saroj raj, nij manu mukuru sudhaari । Baranau Raghubar bimal jasu, jo daayaku phal chaari ।।

श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि । बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि ॥

Having cleansed the mirror of my mind with the dust of the lotus feet of my Guru, I sing the pure glory of Shri Raghuvir (Shri Rama), which bestows the four fruits of life: dharma (righteous conduct), artha (prosperity), kama (fulfilment), and moksha (liberation).

श्री गुरु के चरण-कमलों की धूल से अपने मन रूपी दर्पण को स्वच्छ करके, मैं श्री रघुवीर (श्रीराम) का निर्मल यश वर्णन करता हूँ, जो चारों फल — धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष — को प्रदान करने वाला है।

Doha 2

Buddhiheen tanu jaanike, sumirau Pawan-Kumaar । Bal budhi bidya dehu mohin, harahu kales bikaar ।।

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार । बल बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार ॥

Knowing my body to be devoid of wisdom, I call upon Pawan Kumar — the son of the wind. O Lord, grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove all my sorrows and impurities.

अपने शरीर को बुद्धिहीन जानकर मैं पवनपुत्र हनुमान जी का स्मरण करता हूँ। हे प्रभु, मुझे बल, बुद्धि और विद्या प्रदान करें और मेरे सभी कष्टों तथा विकारों को दूर करें।
